For an attractive addition to your bobblehead collection or museum. In 1960, Major League Baseball decided to give away a series of papier-mache bobblehead dolls for each team[,] with the same cherubic face and imported from Japan. The players that had bobbleheads made for them [caricaturing their own specific facial features]were Roberto Clemente [Pittsburgh Pirates], Mickey Mantle [New York Yankees], Roger Maris [also New York Yankees], and Willie Mays [San Francisco Giants]. Origin and Top-10 Ranking. Consistent with the above history, this 7.5-inch tall (including the white base) Mickey Mantle bobblehead is among the original player-specific bobbleheads manufactured around 1960 in Japan for the U. Market, as indicated by the label affixed to the underside of the base. MFG UNDER EXCLUSIVE LICENSE JAPAN. The Mickey Mantle bobblehead appears on eBays Top 10 Bobbleheads list dated March 13, 2016, alongside four other baseball greats Cal Ripken, Jr. Willie Mays, Roger Maris, and Barry Bonds, Star Wars character Darth Vader, two U. Presidents George Washington and John F. Kennedy, the Beatles, and U. My brother received this Mickey Mantle bobblehead as a young child growing up in Southern California during the early 1960s, possibly in connection with attendance of a Los Angeles Dodgers baseball game. In the 1963 World Series, the LA Dodgers unexpectedly defeated the NY Yankees in a four-game sweep (4-0). Mickey Mantle heroically homered for the Yankees in the top of the 7. Inning of game 4 to tie the score (at 1-1)for the first time in the Series, but the Dodgers scored an extra run in the bottom of the 7. Leading to the sensational loss of both the game and the Series by the two-time (1961 and 1962) defending champion Yankees. This bobblehead has a single-household ownership history, with the original owners name unobtrusively stamped in indelible black ink within one of the two cupped indentations on the underside of the base. For at least the past few decades, the bobblehead has been safe-kept in a clean, dry, smoke-free residence. This Mickey Mantle bobblehead, when compared to other Major League Baseball papier-mache bobbleheads of the same era, is in EXTREMELY GOOD CONDITION, with NO MAJOR FLAWSonly minor imperfections (see detailed list below). The painted surfaces generally hold much of their original luster and depth of color. The papier-mache base, body and head are structurally sound. The coiled spring supporting the bobbing head above the body is bouncy and responsive. The booblehead has been occasionally dusted but NEVER altered, retouched, restored nor repaired in any way during our approximately 55 years of continuous ownership. Detail on All Minor Imperfections Noted (1 mm or more in size). Two chips of blue paint on bill front edge of bill of cap (7 mm x 2 mm at center and 4 mm x 1 mm toward right). One chipped spot (1 mm diameter) of skin-colored paint slightly above tip of nose. Some chipping and flaking of skin-colored paint on underside edge of head (not visible in standard frontal viewing). One chip of blue and white paint (4 mm x 2 mm) between N and Y within NY emblem on jersey. One small chip of white paint (2 mm x 1 mm) where lowest point of left jersey sleeve meets body. One tiny chip of white paint (1 mm x 0.5 mm) at protrusion of jersey above belt buckle. Chipping of white paint along bottom edge of base (one 2 mm and two 1 mm chips along front, one 5 mm chip at front left corner, and one 2 mm chip along left side). Two cracks in papier-mache emanate from lower edge of head, one extending upward (about 3 cm long) at back of head and the other (about 2.5 cm long) below and behind the right ear. Other very fine hairline cracks (up to about 2 cm long) in the paint (probably not extending deeper into underlying papier-mache), generally also emanating from lower edge of head, are discernible on careful examination. A section (15 mm x 4 mm) of inner edge at underside of head below left ear reveals sector-shaped gouging of the papier-mache material, matching round contour of adjacent neck posthence, most likely originating from bumping lower inner edge of head against neck post. Fortunately, this imperfection is visible only when deliberately peering beneath the skirt of headnot during standard viewing from any ordinary angle. The positioning of bobbing head appears to be slightly skewed and/or very slightly rotated towards figures left, with chin coming to rest up to a few millimeters left of centerline when bobblehead is placed on a level surface. Perhaps serendipitouslywith figures eyes, particularly left eye, oriented slightly towards figures rightthis subtle left-skewing of head effectively achieves better center-balancing of Mickeys line-of-sight. Red color hairline-type marking (5 mm long) along upper front edge of base between left shoe and signature. Small Holes (unknown origin). At NY emblem on jersey (1 mm), at inner elbow of left arm (2 mm), and where arches of shoes meet between feet (two 1 mm holes). These holes appear to have been present at original production blemishes, or possibly for ventilation to allow papier-mache to dry out more quickly? Thin extraneous blue brush strokes (2 mm long above right end of right eyebrow and 4 mm long above front center of right stocking). Tiny round paint bubble-type imperfections located on face (0.5 mm on nose and lower right cheek) and within NY emblem on cap (two 1 mm each). Underpainting and overpainting (1 to 3 mm) where black belt and gold buckle meet, and where fingertips of right hand touch baseball bat. Rough edge (3 mm) of papier-mache at highest point where left jersey sleeve and blue undershirt meet. Uneven surface of papier-mache at various locations on white base. Slight leaf-shaped indentation (6 mm x 3 mm) in front of tip of left shoe, flattened edge (4 mm x 3 mm) to right of right shoe, and bump (1mm) behind heels. As a picture is worth a thousand words, please carefully examine all of the pictures associated with this product description to understand the comparative high quality of the bobblehead for its age. 11 x 7 x 6.
