Listed for sale is this vintage Pittsburgh Pirates bobbing head doll from the original 1st baseball set produced from Japan 1960-61. The Pirates and Orioles were the only 2 teams to issue a’mascot’ head. The base is gold and was made w/o a team or city name. The’PIRATES’ on jersey is embossed (raised). Doll has cracking under the right ear/neckline, which was very common from head hitting body. Other than that flaw the paint is excellent all around. The head, body, and base have no chips or cracks. Bottom still has the appropriate’Japan’ sticker affixed. I wanted to add this tidbit from Tim Hunter’s Bobbing Head Dolls book from 1999. Tim is considered the leading authority on vintage bobbing heads – All heads connected to neck by the older model’hook spring’. This can result in dolls head sagging or displaying at a poor angle. Unfortunately nothing much can be done to solve this, as this type of spring is impossible to work with. Dolls in this set tend to be faded. (This one is NOT) Gem mint examples are quite difficult to find. So here I offer for consideration this awesome doll from the inaugural Japanese-made bobbing head set from 1960-61. This doll is 62 yrs old and has withstood the test of time. These things are SO fragile and very hard to keep near mint. I hate to see it go, but I’m downsizing a part of my childhood.
