Vintage Kokeshi Dolls, set of 2. “Bobble”heads – their heads are attached to the body by a some type of wooden rod – the heads rotate around 360 degrees. 2 1/4 – 2 1/2 wide at their widest points. I do not know the exact year these were made but here is what I DO know for sure. When I was growing up, we had a couple that lived next door. The woman was Japanese and they had met when the man was in the military and stationed over in Japan during the 1940’s sometime. When he got out of the military, she came back to the States with him, as did many others. She passed away several years ago but before she did, she gave these Kokeshi to my mother as they were good friends. Her husband had already passed away so she was giving some of her things away. I know she would have told my mom about them but, unfortunately, my mother has also passed away and so I don’t know what she told her about them. She may have had these as a child – or they could have been passed down to her – I simply do not know for sure. I wish I knew more! The details of the painting are simply incredible in color, form, and subject matter. It looks like a Kokeshi figure originated in northern Japan where these were made as souvenirs for the tourists who frequented the onsens or hot bath spas. It is in good shape with its paper label torn on bottom. It is made of some clay or other material not sure. There is some paint loss near neck and shoulders. It is painted beautifully and very fragile thus why it is so rare to survive since I haven’t seen another one. Please see PICs and let me know if you have any questions. Rare Vintage Japanese Kokeshi Dolls. For sale is an absolutely magnificent pair of early Japanese kokeshi dolls that are in very good condition. These dolls are nice and large, measuring approximately 12 inches tall. The female doll is signed with Japanese characters on the back, but I haven’t looked into who the artist may be. If you know the signature please let me know! The dolls are all hand carved and painted, and these are the most impressive kokeshi dolls I have ever seen! The heads can move back and forth when touching them, and they can spin all the way around, but they also lay still when untouched. I believe these are very early kokeshi dolls, likely from the 1930’s before the second world war. As for condition, the male doll is in excellent condition with light wear from age, and the female doll is in great shape as well but there is discoloration and fading to the red colored paint just from old age as well. This listing is for a collection of fifteen vintage wooden kokeshi dolls, plus a pair of earrings. Two are stamped “Made in Japan” on the bottom, two are stamped “Made in Taiwan”, one is stamped “Korea”, and one bears a “Made in Korea” sticker. Another has what appears to be Japanese script with Arabic numerals on the bottom, but the writing is quite small and difficult to make out against the dark background.
